NEW DELHI – The understanding to halt military action between India and Pakistan last month, after nearly four days of conflict due to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on Apr. 22, was purely bilateral and there was no mediation by the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified to the US President Donald Trump in a telephonic conversation on Wednesday.

This comes in the backdrop of Trump claiming that he used trade as a tool to mediate a ceasefire between New Delhi and Islamabad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi "clearly" told Trump that on no occasion issues such as India-US trade deal or mediation between India and Pakistan were discussed with the US administration during Operation Sindoor, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.

"The discussions regarding halting military actions took place directly between India and Pakistan through existing military channels, on Pakistan's request," Misri said, throwing light on Modi's interaction with Trump. "Prime Minister Modi emphasised that India has never accepted mediation, does not accept it, and will never accept it. On this matter, there is complete political consensus in India," Misri added.

The telephonic conversation between the two leaders lasted for nearly 35 minutes, Misri said, adding that they were scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit but the meeting could not happen as Trump had to return to the US early.

Last month, Trump announced the ceasefire between India and Pakistan before Indian government, which resulted in a massive chaos in domestic politics with the opposition parties criticising Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party for allowing a third party intervention in India-Pakistan issues. Trump over a dozens of times claimed that he stopped India-Pakistan conflict using trade as a tool for it.

During the call, Prime Minister Modi discussed Operation Sindoor in detail with President Trump. He clearly stated that after Apr. 22, India had demonstrated to the entire world its firm resolve to take action against terrorism.

"Prime Minister Modi informed President Trump that on the night of May 6-7, India had targeted only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India's actions were measured, precise, and non-escalatory. On the night of May 9-10, India responded forcefully to Pakistan's attack, inflicting significant damage on the Pakistani military and rendering their military airbases inoperable. Due to India's strong retaliation, Pakistan was compelled to request a halt to military actions", Misri said.  End
