MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Meghalaya and Jharkhand Wednesday and Thursday under the influence of several weather systems and has issued a red alert for both regions.

Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Gangetic West Bengal till Wednesday, and over parts of Odisha on Wednesday, the weather bureau said, issuing a red alert. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

Due to the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, the weather department has advised farmers in Jharkhand to postpone the harvest of summer maize, while farmers in southern Gujarat have been advised to postpone the sowing of soybean and rice nurseries. Farmers in north Odisha have been asked to postpone the sowing of millets, maize, pulses, and vegetables, the department said.

The weather bureau sees heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of eastern and central India till Saturday, and over parts of western India till Monday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the Northeast in the next seven days, the bureau said.

Most parts of north western India are likely to receive heavy rainfall till Sunday, the weather department said. Very heavy rainfall is forecast over parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, and over western Uttar Pradesh on Friday and Saturday, it said.

Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over parts of south peninsular India till Thursday, while very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the ghat areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Extremely heavy rainfall is also seen over parts of coastal and southern interior Karnataka on Tuesday, the bureau said.

As of Tuesday, the southwest monsoon has covered Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim entirely. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into the remaining parts of Vidarbha, some more parts of the northern Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, most parts of Chhattisgarh, and some parts of Jharkhand and Bihar, the weather bureau said.  End
