MUMBAI – Farmers across the country have sown kharif crops over 8.9 million hectares as of Tuesday, up nearly 2% from a year ago, data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare showed. The sowing of kharif crops has begun well due to the early onset on the southwest monsoon. The forecast of above-normal rainfall this season has boosted the acreage of key crops such as paddy, sugarcane, and oilseeds.
The area under paddy, one of the main kharif crops, was up over 13% on year at 453,000 hectares as of Tuesday. The government's decision to allow ethanol plants to buy rice from the Food Corp. of India directly has boosted demand for the grain. Market participants expect paddy acreage to increase due to increased demand from the ethanol sector.
The area under pulses also rose to 307,000 hectares, up from 260,000 hectares at the same time last year. Under pulses, urad and moong acreage rose from last year, but the area under tur, the largest kharif pulses crop, was down nearly 27% on year. Arhar, also known as tur, was sown over 30,000 hectares as of Tuesday, down from 41,000 hectares a year ago.
The area under oilseeds was 205,000 hectares as of Tuesday, sharply up 37% from the corresponding period a year ago. Soybean acreage rose a whopping 168% on year to 107,000 hectares. The acreage under cotton was at 1.32 million hectares, slightly down from 1.33 million hectares the previous year.
The acreage under maize was down nearly 16% on year at 360,000 hectares as of Tuesday. The acreage under coarse cereals was down slightly at 589,000 million hectares, against 590,000 million a year ago. The area under millets such as bajra was massively higher than a year ago. The area under bajra rose to 86,000 hectares, from 3,000 hectares a year ago. Jowar has been sown over 101,000 hectares so far, against 75,000 hectares a year ago, the data showed.
The area under sugarcane was largely unchanged at 5.51 million hectares as of Tuesday, against 5.49 million hectares a year ago. The following table details the sowing of key kharif crops, in hectares, compared with year-ago levels and the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
