NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s automobile in-plant railway siding at its facility in Manesar, Haryana, commenced operations on Tuesday, the company said in a statement. The railway siding, registered under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, was inaugurated by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

The Swift maker's second railway siding is also India's biggest, with a total dispatch capability of 450,000 units annually at full capacity. The unit was developed as part of the 126-kilometre Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor that runs between Sonipat and Palwal in Haryana. The project was executed by Haryana Orbital Rail Corp. Ltd., a joint venture set up by the Ministry of Railways and the Haryana government under a public-private partnership.

Among other companies, Maruti Suzuki joined a special purpose vehicle and committed to invest INR 3.25 billion in developing the corridor. Coupled with its other investments in the project, Maruti Suzuki's overall investment is INR 4.52 billion, it said in a release. "Lowering carbon emissions remains a top priority at Maruti Suzuki and we aim to achieve this, by increasing the share of vehicle dispatches through railways to 35% by FY 2030-31," Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hisashi Takeuchi said.

The railway siding at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant features a fully electrified corridor with four full-length tracks for rakes and one for engine escape. The company will transport models made at its Gurugram and Manesar facilities to 18 hubs from this railway siding, which will then be transferred to 380 cities.

Port locations served by this siding include the Mundra and Pipavav ports in Gujarat, which are used by Maruti Suzuki for its exports. Through its Gujarat railway siding, the company has cumulatively despatched 2.5 million units since 2014-15 (Apr-Mar).

For the quarter ended March, Maruti Suzuki had posted a net profit of INR 37.11 billion on revenue of INR 406.74 billion. At 1401 IST, shares of Maruti Suzuki traded at INR 12557 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.2%.  End
