NEW DELHI – India's merchandise trade deficit narrowed to $21.88 billion in May from $26.42 billion the previous month, according to data released by the commerce ministry on Monday. The trade deficit in May 2024 was $22.09 billion.

 

Merchandise exports fell 2.2% on year in May to $38.73 billion, while imports were down 1.7% on year at a three-month low of $60.61 billion. In April, India had exported goods worth $38.49 billion and imported goods worth $64.91 billion. 

 

For Apr-May, the goods trade deficit was $48.33 billion compared to $41.27 billion a year ago. Merchandise exports rose 3.1% on year to $77.19 billion in the first two months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), while imports were up 8.1% at $125.52 billion. 

 

India's services exports in May rose 9.4% on year to $32.39 billion, according to provisional data by the the commerce ministry. Services imports rose just 1.5% on year to $17.14 billion last month, pushing the trade surplus to $15.25 billion from $12.73 billion a year ago. The Reserve Bank of India will further update services trade data by the end of June.

 

Oil imports moderated to $35.47 billion in Apr-May from $36.47 billion a year ago, while electronic goods imports increased to $18.34 billion from $14.20 billion. Gold imports were a tad lower at $5.65 billion in Apr-May compared to $5.87 billion in Apr-May 2024. In May, India imported crude oil worth $14.7 billion and gold worth $2.5 billion. 

 

Petroleum product exports fell to $12.94 billion in Apr-May from $15.14 billion a year ago. Engineering goods exports rose to $19.40 billion during Apr-May from $18.52 billion a year ago. India exported electronic goods worth $8.26 billion in Apr-May, against $5.61 billion a year ago.

 

China remained India's biggest import source nation in Apr-May, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Russia. India imported goods worth $20.22 billion from China in Apr-May compared to $16.28 billion a year ago. Imports from the UAE rose to $12.59 billion in Apr-May from $8.28 billion in the same period last year, while imports from Russia eased slightly to $12.04 billion from $12.42 billion in Apr-May 2024.

 

India's trade surplus with the US widened during the first two months of FY26 to $8.38 billion from $7.12 billion a year ago. India exported goods worth $17.25 billion to the US in Apr-May, compared to $14.17 billion a year ago. Imports from US rose to $8.87 billion in Apr-May from $7.05 billion a year ago.  End
