MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Monday said the southwest monsoon is likely to cover more parts of west and central India over the next 24 hours. The weather bureau said monsoon is likely to cover more parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh during this period.

Conditions are also favourable for the monsoon to cover parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim during the next 24 hours. It is also likely that southwest monsoon will advance into some parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and east Uttar Pradesh during the next two days.

Southwest monsoon is currently in active phase, after being stalled for over 15 days. The northern limit of the monsoon was stuck at Mumbai since May 26 and the eastern arm was stagnant at Balurghat in West Bengal since May 29 till Sunday.

The southwest monsoon on Monday has covered entire Konkan, central Maharashtra, and Goa. It has also advanced into parts of Vidarbha, Gujarat, southwest Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Sikkim, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

With monsoon in the active phase, the weather department said very heavy rains over parts of east and central India will prevail till Friday. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday. The department has issued a red alert in Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday due to extremely heavy rainfall. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

It has also said there is a risk for moderate to high flash flood over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods in Saurashtra, Kutch, Konkan, Goa, and coastal Karnataka during the next 24 hours. Surface runoff and inundation is likely over fully saturated soils and low-lying areas of the above mentioned regions.

The weather department also said very heavy rains were likely over parts of south India till Tuesday. For Monday, it has issued a red alert in Kerala and Karnataka for extremely heavy showers in these regions; and an orange alert in Tamil Nadu. Strong surface winds with speed reaching 40-60 km per hour are likely over Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh during the week. Heavy to very heavy rain along with thunderstorm and lightning are seen over northeast India in the next seven days.

Under the influence of above weather conditions, the meteorological department has asked farmers in south Gujarat to postpone sowing of soybean and rice, and those in Karnataka to postpone the sowing of rice, tur, maize, cotton, soybean, and onions. It has also advised farmers to drain out excess water from the crops which are at seedling stage to prevent water logging.  End
