India's gems, jewellery exports fall 16% on year to $2.26 billion in May

MUMBAI – India's gross exports of gems and jewellery fell nearly 16% on year to $2.26 billion in May and gross imports fell 13% on year to $1.69 billion, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The country's gross gems and jewellery exports in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose 5% to $5.2 billion, while gross imports declined 2.5% to $3.75 billion.
Overall exports of cut and polished diamonds fell 36% on year to $949.70 million in May, while imports fell nearly 39% to $84.80 million. In the first two months of FY26, exports of cut and polished diamonds fell over 22% on year to $2.06 billion and imports fell over 35% to $146.43 million. The country's import of rough diamonds fell over 5% to $2.26 billion in FY26. Export of polished lab-grown diamonds fell 33% on year to $80.90 million in May.
India exported $997.50 million of gold jewellery in May, down more than 17% on year. Exports of gold jewellery in FY26 rose more than 40% to $2.26 billion. Silver jewellery exports in FY26 declined 17.6% to $150.08 million. End
