NEW DELHI - India's WPI inflation fell to a 14-month low of 0.39% in May largely because of lower vegetable and pulses prices, data released by the commerce ministry Monday showed. WPI inflation was 0.85% in April and 2.74% in May 2024.
At 0.39%, wholesale inflation for May is well below the consensus expectation. According to an Informist poll, WPI inflation in May was seen at 0.7%. The print for March was revised higher to 2.25% from the provisional estimate of 2.05%.
WPI vegetables inflation fell to a 28-month low of (-)21.62% last month from (-)18.26% in April, while pulses inflation declined to (-)10.41% in May, the lowest since November 2018. Overall, the food articles inflation fell to (-)1.56% in May, the lowest since September 2021.
The all commodities index of the WPI was down 0.1% on month in May, while the food index rose 0.1% from April. The primary articles index fell 0.1% on month in May, while the fuel and power index was down 1.0% from April. Fuel and power inflation fell to (-)2.27% in May from (-)2.18% in the previous month, while manufactured products inflation eased to 2.04% last month from 2.62% in April.
Core WPI inflation--or inflation excluding food and fuel items--eased to a five-month low of 0.9% in May. Core WPI inflation was at 1.5% in April.
"As many as 20 of the 22 food items for which data is released by the Department of Consumer Affairs, reported an easing in their YoY (year-on-year) inflation rate in June 2025 (until Jun. 15) compared to May 2025, partly aided by a favourable base," Rahul Agrawal, senior economist at ICRA, said in a note. "Given these trends, ICRA expects the WPI-food inflation to soften further in June 2025 from 1.7% in May 2025.
WPI inflation remains well below its retail counterpart. Data released Thursday showed CPI inflation fell to 2.82% in May, the lowest since February 2019.
