NEW DELHI – Domestic automobile despatches grew only 1.8% on year in May, but exports continued their robust showing with a 23% on-year increase last month, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said Monday. Companies sold 2.01 million automobile units to dealerships in India and 479,538 units to dealerships abroad.

Growth of two-wheeler sales, which form nearly 83% of overall automobile despatches, was buoyed by scooter sales but was restricted by flat growth in motorcycle sales. Companies sold 1.66 million two-wheelers in May to dealerships in India, up 2.2% on year. Companies exported 380,979 two-wheelers to dealerships last month, registering a growth of nearly 22% on year.

Despatches of scooters, constituting 35% of the overall two-wheeler sales, grew 7.1% on year to 579,507 units in May. However, the month saw a subdued demand for motorcycles, sales of which remained largely unchanged at 1.1 million units. While exports of scooters contracted 7.2% to 47,182 units, motorcycle exports grew 27% to 333,149 units.

Mopeds, forming a relatively smaller base in overall two-wheeler sales, saw sales contracting nearly 8% to 37,264 units in May. However, exports more than doubled to 648 units in May, up from 264 units a year ago. TVS Motor Co. Ltd. is the only company making mopeds in India, as per SIAM data.

Companies produced 2.1 million two-wheelers in May, nearly 5% higher on year. Bulk of the increase in output was led by scooters, production of which increased nearly 12% to 676,490 units.

Local passenger vehicle despatches contracted nearly 1% on year to 344,656 units, but exports grew 24% on year to 67,181 units. Export figures excludes sales by BMW, Mercedes, Tata Motors Ltd., Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Auto due to lack of data, as per SIAM. Production of passenger vehicles increased 5.4% to 389,491 units in May.

Automakers sold 93,951 passenger cars in India, down 12.2% on year. Amid dwindling demand for smaller cars, companies held back their production as output fell 4% on year to 136,859 units in May. Exports of this sub-segment grew nearly 18% to 33,902 units. Utility vehicles' despatches in India grew nearly 8% on year to 196,821 units, and their exports grew even faster at 32% to 32,411 units.

Despatches of vans in India, primarily Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s Maxximo and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s Eeco, grew 12.5% on year to 12,327 units.

Three-wheelers' local despatches fell 3.3% in May to 53,942 units, with each and every sub-segment recording a contraction. However, their exports grew nearly 37% on year to 31,084 units. Production of three-wheelers grew 17% on year to 87,555 units in May.

Passenger carriers' despatches in India fell 2.4% on year to 44,354 units last month, while goods carriers' despatches contracted 1.6% to 8,720 units. Demand for passenger carriers abroad remained robust as automakers exported 30,838 units of the sub-segment, registering a growth of just over 37%.

Sales of electric rickshaws and electric carts fell over 40?ch to 720 units and 148 units, respectively.
