IMD sees southwest monsoon advancing to more parts of country in 2 days

NEW DELHI – Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance to more parts of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Vidarbha in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said Saturday. In the subsequent three days, the monsoon is expected to advance to some parts of West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The weather department said monsoon is likely to be in an active phase with heavy to very heavy rainfall. The bureau also sees isolated extremely heavy showers over south India till Tuesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely over Konkan and Goa till Tuesday.
After an eight-day early onset over Kerala on May 24, the southwest monsoon stalled for over 15 days. The northern limit of the monsoon has been stuck at Mumbai since May 26 and the eastern arm remains stagnant at Balurghat, West Bengal, since May 29.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Konkan, Goa, costal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka, along with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry for Saturday. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The weather bureau has forecast heavy rainfall over some parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, along with coastal and south interior Karnataka on Wednesday. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana are also likely to see heavy rainfall over isolated parts till Tuesday. North interior Karnataka may see very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday with very heavy rainfall expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal during the same days. Kerala and Mahe will see heavy rainfall Monday. Meanwhile, north interior Karnataka will see extremely heavy rainfall till Sunday. Very heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Coastal Karnataka till Sunday. Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Konkan and Goa till Monday, the bureau said.
Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over western Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, eastern Madhya Pradesh between Monday and Wednesday, Vidarbha between Tuesday and Friday, Chhattisgarh on Monday and Tuesday, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will likely to see heavy showers till Sunday. Very heavy rainfall is seen over western Madhya Pradesh on Friday, eastern Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, Chhattisgarh between Wednesday and Friday, Jharkhand on Tuesday and Wednesday, and in Odisha on Monday and Tuesday.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand till Sunday, over Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and Friday, over East Rajasthan on Sunday and Friday, according to the bureau. Very heavy rainfall is also likely in Uttarakhand from Monday to Thursday. Dust storms with wind speeds reaching 50-60 km per hour gusting to 70 km per hour are very likely over parts of Rajasthan till Tuesday.
Meanwhile, no significant change in maximum temperatures are likely over northwest, central, and eastern India till Sunday. However, the bureau sees temperatures gradually falling by 2-5 degrees Celsius in the subsequent five days. The bureau does not see significant change in maximum temperatures over rest of the country.
Warm night conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi till Sunday, the bureau said. End
