NEW DELHI – The government has formed a high-level committee under Home Secretary Govind Mohan for a comprehensive investigation of the Air India AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu said Saturday. The committee, with technical support from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, would submit its consolidated report in three months, Naidu added.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, which has already started its probe, recovered the black box of the aircraft at 1700 IST on Friday, Naidu said in a press briefing. Black box of an aircraft records data during flight without interruption and holds crucial information.
On Thursday, Air India's Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, with 242 passengers and crew on board, crashed into a hostel housing medical students immediately after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Out of the 242 persons on board, only one survived.
"The decoding of the black box is going to give in-depth insight into what would have actually happened during the process of the crash or moments before the crash," Naidu said. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will also submit its report very soon, Naidu mentioned.
Considering the seriousness of the incident, the government felt the need to form the high-level committee for the investigation, Naidu said. The committee's investigation will be independent of all other investigations happening simultaneously, Naidu added.
The committee will meet Monday, according to Naidu. Members of this panel include civil aviation secretary, an additional secretary from the home ministry, a representative from Gujarat government, Ahmedabad police commissioner, director general of inspection and safety from the Indian Air Force, director general of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, director general of Directorate General of Civil Aviation, special director from the Intelligence Bureau, and director from the Directorate of Forensic Science Services.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has directed an urgent extended surveillance of aircraft belonging to the Boeing 787 family. There are 34 Boeing 787 planes in India's aircraft fleet, out of which, eight have already been inspected, Naidu said.
"We are going to ensure that without any hesitation we improve every necessary thing (that) comes our way (during the inspection and investigation by the probe agency and the panel) to improve safety," Naidu said. End
