IMD sees southwest monsoon advancing to more parts of country in 2 days

NEW DELHI – Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance to more parts of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Vidarbha in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said Saturday. In the subsequent three days, the monsoon is expected to advance to some parts of West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The weather department said monsoon is likely to be in an active phase with heavy to very heavy rainfall. The bureau also sees isolated extremely heavy showers over south India till Tuesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely over Konkan and Goa till Tuesday.
After an eight-day early onset over Kerala on May 24, the southwest monsoon stalled for over 15 days. The northern limit of the monsoon has been stuck at Mumbai since May 26 and the eastern arm remains stagnant at Balurghat, West Bengal, since May 29.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Konkan, Goa, costal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka, along with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry for Saturday. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. More
