MUMBAI – Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into more parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Vidarbha during the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said. In the subsequent three days, the monsoon is also expected to advance into some parts of West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The weather department said the monsoon is likely to be in active phase with heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy showers over south India till Tuesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely over Konkan and Goa till Tuesday.
After an eight-day early onset over Kerala on May 24, the southwest monsoon has stalled for over 15 days. The northern limit of the monsoon has been stuck at Mumbai since May 26 and the eastern arm remains stagnant at Balurghat in West Bengal since May 29.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Konkan, Goa, costal Karnataka, and south interior Karnataka for Friday. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. On Saturday and Monday, strong surface winds with speeds reaching 50-60 km per hour are very likely over Kerala.
The department has also issued an orange alert for central Maharashtra, north interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala for very heavy rainfall for Friday. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
Dust storms with wind speeds reaching 50-60 km per hour gusting to 70 km per hour are very likely over parts of Rajasthan till Tuesday. The bureau said heatwave is likely over parts of Rajasthan till Sunday and severe heatwave over west Rajasthan during the same period. It has also issued a red alert for severe heatwave in Rajasthan and Punjab till Saturday and for Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for Friday.
A severe heatwave indicates actual maximum temperatures in a given region exceeding 47 degrees Celsius and a red alert is issued for heatwave when "severe" heatwave persists for more than two days.
Heatwave is also likely over Jammu, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh till Saturday. The weather bureau said heavy rainfall and heatwave are seen over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till Saturday. Heatwave conditions are likely in Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
According to a post by the weather department on social media platform X, the department has issued a "multi-hazard warning" for the country for Friday. According to the India Meteorological Department, a "multi-hazard warning" means a forecast that alerts about multiple potentially dangerous weather conditions or events such as cyclones, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, heatwaves, cold waves, and fog, all occurring at the same time or in sequence.
