AHMEDABAD - Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday visited the site of the Air India AI-171 aircraft crash and condoled the loss of lives in the accident. Shortly after take-off on Thursday, the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, with 242 people on board, crashed into a hostel for medical students of the B.J. Medical College and Hospital in Ahmedabad.

The prime minister met the next of kin of the deceased, as well as the injured at the civil hospital Friday. Other than the medical students injured in the accident, he also met the lone survivor among those on the aircraft. Modi also met the wife of Gujarat's former chief minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the plane crash.

Later, he met government officials and emergency response teams attending to the situation.

While Air India late Thursday confirmed the death of 241 of the 242 passengers on the AI-171 flight, Gujarat government officials are yet to state a number of those who lost their lives in the accident. According to unconfirmed reports, as many as 265 people have died, including victims from B.J. Medical College hostel premises and the nearby area.

A senior state government official said more bodies might be recovered from the wreckage, and added that the death toll could rise to as high as 300.

Meanwhile, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has announced that it is fully operational, after operations were suspended for a few hours following the crash.  End
