NEW DELHI – The Ministry of External Affairs Friday expressed "deep concern" over the Israel-Iran conflict and urged both the sides to avoid any escalatory steps. It further stated that India is closely monitoring the evolving situation. "We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites. India urges both the sides to avoid any escalatory steps," the ministry said in statement.
Israel launched pre-emptive strikes against Iran early Friday, targetting Tehran's nuclear programme, the Israel Defense Forces informed on X, formerly Twitter. It also said that the chief of staff of Iranian Armed Forces and Commander of Iran's Emergency Command were eliminated in the Israeli strikes across Iran by more than 200 fighter jets.
India said that existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. "India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support. Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories," the ministry said.
Iranian state media has confirmed the death of Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami. Another top Guards official and two nuclear scientists are also feared dead, according to media reports. The Revolutionary Guards is one of the main power centres of the country and controls Iran's arsenal of ballistic missiles.
Following the strike, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified there was no US involvement or assistance in the strike carried out by Israel. "Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region," Rubio said in a statement, CNN reported.
US President Donald Trump Thursday said an Israeli strike on Iran "could very well happen", and a senior Israeli official told The Wall Street Journal that it could occur as early as Sunday unless Iran agreed to pause the production of nuclear materials. End
