MUMBAI – Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu Thursday said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has begun a formal investigation into the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, which killed around 250 people on board. The government is also forming a comittee to examine the crash, the minister said.

"Following the tragic incident in Ahmedabad, a formal investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in line with international protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)," the minister said in a post on social media platform X. "Additionally, the government is constituting a high-level committee comprising experts from multiple disciplines to examine the matter in detail. The committee will work to strengthen aviation safety and prevent such incidents in future."

On Thursday, Air India's Flight AI-171 with 242 passengers and crew on board crashed into a hostel of medical students immediately after take-off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Over 200 people are feared dead and scores of others were injured.

The Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner was flying to London's Gatwick airport with 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, one Canadian citizen, and 12 crew members. Ramesh Vishwaskumar, a British citizen of Indian origin, is said to be the lone survivor of the plane crash.

Home Minister Amit Shah said there was little chance of saving any of the passengers because of over 125,000 litres of fuel inside the aircraft and the high temperature. The home minister Thursday said that the work of recovering the dead bodies from the crash site was almost over.

N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of the Tata Group and Air India, has announced compensation of INR 10 million for the next of kin of the deceased in the crash, and also promised help to those injured.  End
