MUMBAI – India received 3.7 millimetres of rainfall on Thursday, 24% below the normal 4.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Of the four homogeneous regions across the country, three received below-normal rainfall and one received above-normal showers.

 

The southern peninsula received 12.3 millimetres of rainfall, nearly double the normal 6.2 millimetres, the data showed. Six out of 10 subdivisions in the region received "large excess" rainfall Thursday. A cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal led to heavy rains over parts of southern India. 

 

Rainfall in eastern India and the Northeast was 75% below normal at 2.4 millimetres. In north western India, rainfall was at 0.3 millimetres, 84% below the normal 2.1 millimetres. Central India recorded 2.4 millimetres of rainfall, 47% below the normal 4.5 millimetres.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions, rainfall Thursday was "large excess" in six, "excess" in three, "deficient" in two, and "large deficient" in 13, the data showed. There was no rainfall in eight subdivisions and "normal" showers in four subdivisions.

 

Since Jun. 1, the country has received 30 millimetres of rainfall, 33% below the normal weighted average of 45 millimetres for the period, the data showed.  End
