NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Railways is in talks with four to five states, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, to source renewable energy for its green energy capacity with an aim to achieve net zero emission target, Railway and Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. Responding to a question by Informist regarding share of green energy in Railway's overall power consumption, the minister said Railways is working on increasing the capacity of renewable energy and has recently signed a memorandum of understanding for 170 megawatts with Madhya Pradesh.
"We are working on increasing the capacity and the energy that we take from renewable sources. We recently signed a MoU of 170 megawatts (power purchase agreement) with Madhya Pradesh. Soon it will be operational. We are also talking with four-five states -- Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and others. We are ready to tap all the renewable energy projects in these states," Vaishnaw said, adding that he has also spoken to the power minister for energy procurement from nuclear power plants. "Railways energy requirement will increase with more infrastructure expansion. We need a clean environment. So, it's important that we shift from road to rail," he said.
Indian Railways aims to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030. According to the Ministry of Railways, to achieve net zero carbon emission, expected requirement of renewable capacity by 2029-30 would be about 30,000 megawatts.
In February, Vaishnaw had said that by 2030, traction power requirement of the Railways is projected to reach 10,000 megawatts. So far, it has secured 4,260 megawatts of installed solar capacity and 3,427 megawatts of installed wind capacity to meet its energy needs, he said. The minister had also said that the Railways' 100% electrification is slated for completion in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). End
