NEW DELHI - The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved two multitracking projects of railways in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Jharkhand, with a total cost of INR 64.05 billion. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the 133-kilometre Koderma–Barkakana doubling project in Jharkhand and the 185-kilometre Ballari-Chikjajur doubling project in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

"The two projects covering seven districts across the states of Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 318 kilometres," Railways, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting. "The approved multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity to approx. 1,408 villages, which are having a population of about 2.8 million", he said.

Vaishnaw also said that these are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as coal, iron ore, finished steel, cement, fertiliser, agriculture commodities, and petroleum products, among others.  He further said that the government's push for improving transportation has reduced the country's logistics cost by four percentage points.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the capacity augmentation work will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 49 million tonnes per annum. The Railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics cost of the country, the ministry said.  End
