MUMBAI – Water levels in 161 key reservoirs across India rose to 56.802 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 55.334 billion cubic metres on May 29, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 31.13% of the total live storage capacity of 182.444 billion cubic metres.

The water level as of Thursday was up 38.4% from a year ago and 28.9% above the 10-year average for this period. Water levels in reservoirs have begun replenishing as the onset of the southwest monsoon brought heavy rainfall to certain parts of the country, especially south India.

Though the onset occurred earlier this year, starting in Kerala on May 24, the advancement of the northern limit of the monsoon paused after May 29. On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said conditions are favourable for the monsoon to move further to some more parts of central India and adjoining regions in the east around Saturday.

In the northern region, reservoirs held 5.766 billion cubic metres of water, which is 29.07% of their total live storage capacity, down from 30.09% at the same period last year. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

Reservoirs in the eastern region, comprising Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar, held 5.678 billion cubic metres of water, or 26.14% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 27.26% in the corresponding period last year.

The water level in the western region was 11.698 billion cubic metres or 31.31% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, up from 22.54% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 14.992 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 30.86% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 27.68% a year ago.

The water level in the southern region was 18.668 billion cubic metres, 33.98% of the total live storage capacity of 45 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was just 13.25% of the total live storage capacity, which is much below the current level.

Since Jun. 1, the country has received 23.9 millimetre rainfall, 33% below the normal weighted average of 35.5 mm for the period, the India Meteorological Department said.  End
