NEW DELHI - Mills have exported 516,782 tonnes of sugar as of Friday for the 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) sugar season, according to the All India Sugar Trade Association. The government lifted the ban on sugar exports on Jan. 20 and set a quota of 1 million tonnes. So far, mills have dispatched 51.6% of the export quota.
Assessing the current export scenario, industry associations estimate total exports at 800,000 tonnes in the 2024-25 season. India's exports have slowed down amid a fall in global sugar prices. At 1612 IST, white sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 0.2% at $473.4 per tonne, but down from $560 per tonne levels in March.
Of the 516,782 tonnes dispatched, the lion's share is white sugar at 409,555 tonnes, followed by 81,845 tonnes of refined sugar, and 25,382 tonnes of raw sugar, the trade body said, quoting data from Mumbai-based trading house Dr. Amin Controllers Pvt. Ltd.
About 23,219 tonnes of sugar were lying at ports, waiting to be loaded as of Friday, the trade body said. Of the total sugar exported, 23% was to Somalia, 15% to Sri Lanka, 14% to Afghanistan, among others, the association said. End
