MUMBAI – Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance over some more parts of central India and adjoining regions in the east around Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon is also likely to resume and lead to very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over parts of south India from Thursday to Monday, and over Konkan and Goa on Friday and Saturday, the weather department said.

The weather bureau sees heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of west India till Monday. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east and central India and Uttarakhand during the same period, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from Wednesday to Monday, and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Monday, it said.

After stalling for over 15 days, the southwest monsoon is expected to revive in Mumbai by Saturday and rest of Maharashtra thereafter, according to a senior official at the weather department's regional centre in Mumbai. "The monsoon is likely to revive by Saturday in Mumbai, and thereon over rest of Maharashtra, after which the regions may face extreme weather (heavy rainfall). The city is expected to face a very wet weekend," Sushma Nair, scientist at the weather bureau's Mumbai centre, told Informist on Monday.

The weather bureau has issued a red alert for a severe heatwave in west Rajasthan and a heatwave in east Rajasthan till Thursday. A severe heatwave indicates actual maximum temperatures in a given region exceeding 47 degrees Celsius. Heatwave conditions are also likely in parts of northwest India till Friday, the bureau said.

Hot and humid weather is likely in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Tuesday, and in Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha till Wednesday, the weather department said. Warm night conditions are seen in some pockets of Punjab and Haryana till Wednesday, in west Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, and in Rajasthan till Thursday, the department said.  End
