MUMBAI - The number of e-way bills generated in May rose 18.9% on year to 122.65 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. Sequentially, the number of e-way bills generated was up 2.8% from 119.27 million in April.
In absolute terms, the number of e-way bills generated in May was the second-highest of all time. However, the year-on-year growth of 18.9% in generation of e-way bills in May was the slowest in three months. In April, the on-year growth of 23.4% was the highest since October 2023. On average, e-way bills had risen 17.3% on year in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar).
An e-way bill is a GST document for transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.
The increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions are reflected in the next month's collections. GST collections rose 16.4% on year to INR 2.01 trillion in May, data released earlier this month showed. End
