MUMBAI – After stalling for over 15 days, the southwest monsoon is expected to revive in Mumbai by Saturday and rest of Maharashtra thereafter, according to a senior official at the India Meteorological Department's regional centre in Mumbai. "The monsoon is likely to revive by Saturday in Mumbai, and thereon over rest of Maharashtra, after which the regions may face extreme weather (heavy rainfall). The city is expected to face a very wet weekend," Sushma Nair, scientist at the regional centre, told Informist.
Since Jun. 1, Mumbai and its suburbs have received 50?ove normal showers at 82.8 millimetres and 87.5 mm, respectively. The district of Thane has also received excess rainfall at 83 mm, against the normal of 48.7 mm.
The onset of monsoon in Mumbai was on May 26, 16 days prior to its normal onset date of Jun. 11. The rainfall in the city and the suburbs in the first few days of the onset was heavy but it petered out as the northern limit of the monsoon came to a halt over the country. On Sunday, Mumbai suburbs and the Thane district received 95% and 42?low normal rainfall, respectively. Maharashtra as a whole has recorded 15 mm rainfall, which is 49?low the normal of 29.7 mm during Jun. 1-8.
Monsoon may begin reviving across the country by Tuesday and Wednesday, Nair said. "All the conditions are favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon. The advancement is determined by several wind patterns, and so far it is all normal," she said. "However, the revival is likely only if the pattern of the westerlies is not interrupted." Westerly winds will move over the coastal regions, hit the Sayhadris or the western ghats in general, rise up, form into clouds, and bring rains to the region, the scientist said.
The northern limit of the monsoon has been stuck at Mumbai since May 26 and the eastern arm remains stagnant at Balurghat in West Bengal since May 29. The all-India daily average rainfall since Jun. 1 has been deficient for past three days. According to data from the weather bureau, India received 29?low normal showers at 22.2 mm so far during the southwest monsoon season and as of Monday the country received 56?low normal rainfall at 1.8 mm.
Nair said the forecast for the rest of the southwest monsoon over Maharashtra and Mumbai remains the same as the weather department had said in its long-range monsoon outlook. In its updated long rage forecast for Jun-Sept, the weather bureau said Maharashtra is likely to receive above normal rainfall during the season.
In a release on Monday, the weather department said monsoon is likely to be active over south peninsular India with heavy to very heavy rainfall over Karnataka Thursday to Sunday. It also expects extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Karnataka during these days. End
