India rainfall 76% below normal at 1.0 mm Fri, 3% below normal since Jun 1

MUMBAI – India received 1 millimetre of rainfall on Friday, 76% below the normal of 4.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. All the four homogeneous regions across the country received below-normal showers as the advancement of the southwest monsoon slowed down. 

 

Rainfall in east and northeast India was 66% below normal at 3.2 mm, data from the department showed. In northwest India, rainfall was 72% below normal at 0.3 mm. Central India recorded 0.8 mm of precipitation, 72% below the normal of 3.0 mm. The southern peninsula received 0.4 mm of rainfall, which is sharply below the average of 5.9 mm.

 

The northern limit of the monsoon has been stuck over Mumbai since May 26 while the eastern arm has been stagnant over Sikkim and sub-Himalayan West Bengal since May 29. The southwest monsoon is likely to revive over most parts of the southern peninsula between Jun. 12 and Jun. 17, said private weather forecaster Skymet.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions, rainfall on Friday was "normal" in two, "deficient" in six, and "large deficient" in 26, the data showed. Two subdivisions saw no rainfall, while no subdivision received "large excess" or "excess" showers. Since Jun. 1, the country has received 18.4 mm of rainfall, 3% below the normal weighted average of 19.0 mm for the period, the data showed.  End
