NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday inaugurated the Chenab Railway Bridge, the world's tallest, and also flagged off a Vande Bharat Express train connecting Katra and Srinagar, from Katra railway station in Jammu and Kashmir. The tallest arch bridge over Chenab River, which stands at 359 metres above the riverbed, provides railway connectivity to Kashmir. It is 35 metre taller than the France's Eiffel Tower.

Prime Minister Modi said that the state-of-the-art bridge will improve connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. "We have always invoked Maa Bharati with deep reverence, saying, "from Kashmir to Kanyakumari". Today, this has become a reality even in our railway network," Modi said at a rally in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir.

The prime minister also inaugurated Anji Bridge and said that both the bridges will enhance tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. With the inauguration of these bridges, Modi said, Kashmir's economy will grow. Traders will be able to transport their products to rest of the country through trains as the bridges provides all weather connectivity to the Kashmir region, Modi said.

"The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project is a symbol of a new, empowered Jammu and Kashmir, and a resounding proclamation of India's strength," Modi said.

This marked Modi's first visit to the Union territory after Apr. 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 26 people, mainly tourists, were killed. The prime minister criticised Pakistan for backing terrorists and promoting cross-border terrorism in the region. He underlined that the region suffered a lot due to Pakistan sponsored terrorism.

"Pakistan attacked humanity and Kashmiriyat in Pahalgam on Apr. 22. Pakistan wanted to ignite communal riots in the country. Pakistan wanted to damage economy of Kashmir. Pakistan deliberately targeted tourists in Pahalgam to end the source of income in Kashmir," Modi said. He noted that the youth of Jammu and Kashmir has stood against terrorism now.

Invoking Operation Sindoor, Modi said that a befitting response was given to Pakistan-based terrorists last month. "Whenever Pakistan hears the name Operation Sindoor, it will be reminded of its shameful defeat," Modi said. Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7 and attacked terrorist camps at nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Apart from the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Bridge, the prime minister also inaugurated and laid foundation stone for several infrastructure projects, including road projects, in Jammu and Kashmir. End
