NEW DELHI - Axis Bank's former independent director S. Mahendra Dev has been appointed as chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, a position that has been vacant since the demise of former chairman Bibek Debroy in November 2024.
The appointment was confirmed by Axis Bank in an exchange filing Thursday, in which the bank congratulated Dev for his new position. It also informed exchanges that Dev has resigned as an independent director on its board. We "have deep appreciation for the guidance and invaluable contributions rendered by Prof. S. Mahendra Dev," Axis Bank wrote.
Dev has a background in economics, with a Ph.D from Delhi School of Economics. He later conducted a post-doctoral research at Yale University. Dev was also director and vice chancellor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research. Prior to that, he served as an independent director of Kotak Mahindra Bank.
With multiple papers and books to his credit, Dev has been on important panels, including those of the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the United Nations Development Programme, among others. End
