Global coffee prices fall 0.4% on month in May, says Intl Coffee Organization

MUMBAI – Global coffee prices fell 0.4% on month to 334.41 cents a pound in May, as per the International Coffee Organization's composite indicator of prices. During the month, the composite indicator fluctuated between 305.96 cents a pound and 355.00 cents a pound, with a median value of 335.49 cents a pound, the organisation said in a report.
"A combination of specific events, macroeconomic occurrences and geopolitical factors has ushered in a degree of negative uncertainty within the coffee market, where a slight negative trend has emerged in May 2025," the report said.
The price of Colombian Milds coffee rose 0.4% on month to 395.59 cents a pound in May and that of Other Milds rose 1.3% on month to 397.84 cents a pound. Brazilian Naturals appreciated 0.5% on month to 380.02 cents a pound, while Robustas fell 3.5% to 237.76 cents a pound. The London Intercontinental Commodity Exchange market was the main driver of the decline, decreasing by 4.7%, whereas the New York ICE market shrank by 0.6% in May.
The arbitrage between the London and New York futures markets grew 6.6% to 143.58 cents a pound in May, according to the report.
Global green beans exports in April fell 6.8% on year to 10.2 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg). This is the fourth month the exports of total green beans fell in coffee year 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), the report said. Data for exports come with a month's lag.
Exports of Colombian Milds increased by 1.1% on year in April to 870,000 bags, marking the 19th consecutive month of positive growth. Green bean exports of the Robustas were down 5.8% on year to 3.98 million bags in April. The main driver of the downturn was Brazil, whose exports decreased by 86.4% on year to 100,000 bags, the report said.
Shipments of the Other Milds rose 1.5% on year in April to 2.16 million bags. Green bean exports of Brazilian Naturals decreased by 14.4% on year in April to 3.19 million bags.
Total exports of soluble coffee rose 6% on year to 1.13 million bags in April. Brazil was the largest exporter of soluble coffee in the month, shipping 280,000 bags.
Coffee exports from South America fell 28.4% on year to 3.71 million bags in April. Exports from Africa rose 30.2% to 1.80 million bags. Exports from Mexico and Central America rose 4.1% to 1.78 million bags in April and exports from Asia and Oceania were up 8.3% to 4.14 million bags, the organisation said.
Global coffee production in 2023-24 (Oct-Sept) is expected to have increased to 178 million bags, up from 168.2 million bags in the previous year, the report said. Consumption of coffee in 2023-24 is expected to have risen 2.2% to 177.0 million bags, which means the global coffee market is likely to have been left with a surplus of 1 million bags, as per the report.
