MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department expects heatwave conditions in Odisha on Thursday and Friday, and in west Rajasthan from Saturday to Monday. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Odisha Wednesday, the agency said.
Meanwhile, the northern limit of the monsoon has been stuck at Mumbai since May 26 and the eastern arm remains stagnant at Balurghat in West Bengal since Thursday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said Tuesday. The southwest monsoon is unlikely to make any significant progress next week as a monsoon system is yet to be formed over the Bay of Bengal, the private agency said.
The weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya on Wednesday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours. Heavy rainfall is likely over pockets of the Northeast till Thursday, while light or moderate rainfall is expected in the same region in the next seven days, the weather department said.
A wet spell is likely to continue over most parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the next seven days, with heavy rainfall over some parts on Wednesday, the department said. Isolated heavy rainfall is seen over Bihar on Wednesday, it said.
For northwest India, the weather bureau forecast a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on Wednesday. Similar weather conditions are also seen over parts of south India till Sunday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala on Wednesday, it said.
No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over northwest India in the next 24 hours, and a gradual rise of 4-6 degrees Celsius is expected in the subsequent three days. In central India, no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected in the next 24 hours, and thereafter, a gradual rise of 2-4 degrees Celsius is likely, the weather department said.
Maximum temperatures in east India are likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next two days, after which they could gradually rise by 2 degrees Celsius. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over the rest of the country, the department said. End
