AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India during Apr-May rose nearly 6% on year to 147.20 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. The rise was mainly led by an uptrend in crude oil and petroleum products cargo, which rose almost 7% on year in Apr-May to 43.88 million tonnes. Crude oil and petroleum products cargo accounts for a little over a third of the total cargo handled at all the major ports across country.

Other than crude oil, container traffic in tonnage terms increased 12% on year to 34.36 million tonnes, thermal coal cargo volume for Apr-May rose 0.4% on year to 23.40 million tonnes, iron ore pellets rose 10% on year to 9.63 million tonnes, and raw fertiliser was up over 21% on year at 1.75 million tonnes. Coking coal volume rose nearly 8% on year to 11.10 million tonnes, while miscellaneous traffic for Apr-May was up almost 7% on year at 18.24 million tonnes.

The increase in cargo handled was under pressure due to lower volume of finished fertilisers in the first two months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), which was down 18.3% on year at 983,000 tonnes. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, fell more than 31% on year to 3.86 million tonnes.

Among specific ports, Deendayal Port handled the highest traffic of 25.88 million tonnes in Apr-May, followed closely by Paradip Port at 26.10 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 16.64 million tonnes.
