MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Tuesday issued warnings for multiple weather conditions across the country. It has predicted heatwave and very heavy rainfall over different parts of the country for the next two days.

The weather department said heatwave is likely in Gangetic West Bengal till Wednesday and in Odisha till Friday. It also said hot and humid weather is likely in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu during the week. It has predicted maximum temperatures in east India to gradually rise by 2-3 degress Celsius during the next two days.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over northeast India for the next two days and has also issued an orange alert for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for Tuesday. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours. However, the bureau expects intensity of rainfall to decrease after two days, and the region is likely to receive light or moderate rainfall during the next seven days.

Under the influence of heavy rains over northeast India, the bureau has asked farmers in Arunachal Pradesh to postpone the transplantation of rice. Moving to the regions which are likely to see heatwave, the department has advised farmers in Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha to apply light irrigation to protect standing crops, vegetables, and orchards from the adverse effects of heatwaves and high temperatures.

Apart from northeast India, the weather bureau has also issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall for nine other sub-divisions in east and northwest India on Tuesday. Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and west Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive heavy rainfall Tuesday. West Rajasthan is likely to see dust storm over a few places and Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness hailstorm on Tuesday.

The weather bureau expects maximum temperatures in the northwest to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius during the next two days and gradually rise by 4-5 degrees Celsius in the subsequent five days. It has predicted heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala and coastal Karnataka till Wednesday and light to moderate rainfall is likely over other parts of the southern India.  End
