MUMBAI – The sowing of summer crops across India reached 8.4 million hectares as of Friday, marking an over 12% increase from 7.5 million hectares a year ago, according to data released by the agriculture ministry. Rice, the country's largest summer crop in terms of both acreage and production, saw an over 15% rise in acreage to 3.6 million hectares from 3.1 million hectares a year ago.
According to the data, the acreage for coarse cereals also grew nearly 11% on year to 1.4 million hectares. Maize, the leading coarse cereal in terms of area and production during the summer season, saw an increase in acreage to 880,000 hectares from 737,000 hectares a year ago. On the other hand, the acreage under bajra, the second-largest coarse cereal, fell over 1% to 490,000 hectares.
The total area sown under all pulses stood at 2.4 million hectares, up nearly 13% on year, the report showed. Under pulses, the acreage of moong rose to 2.1 million hectares as of Friday from 1.9 million hectares a year ago, while that of urad expanded to 307,000 hectares from 257,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds rose to 945,000 hectares from 923,000 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Sesamum, the primary summer oilseed crop, saw a slight decline of nearly 1%, with acreage at 470,000 hectares. Groundnut acreage rose nearly 5% to 431,000 hectares while sunflower sowing surged over 16% on year to 36,000 hectares, according to the data.
