India May coal output up 2.7% on year at 86.24 mln tn

MUMBAI – India's coal production rose 2.7% on year to 86.24 million tonnes in May, the Ministry of Coal said in a release Monday. Cumulative coal production rose 3.4% on year to 168.21 million tonnes in Apr-May, the first two months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). Stocks held by coal companies rose 29.2% on year to 122.69 million tonnes as on May 31, the release said.
Coal production from captive or commercial mines rose 24.6% on year to 16.43 million tonnes in May. Coal dispatches from captive or commercial mines increased 13.8% on year to 17.50 million tonnes in May. The growth in both production and dispatch ensures a steady coal supply to important industries such as power, steel, and cement, the release said.
During May, three clearances, including Stage I and Stage II Forest Clearances and Mining Lease execution for different coal blocks, were obtained. Also, vesting orders for six coal blocks located in Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh were signed on Thursday. All six blocks were under the 11th tranche of coal mine auctions. End
