MUMBAI – Heavy-to-very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeastern states till Wednesday and decrease in intensity thereafter, the India Meteorological Department said Monday. A wet spell is likely to continue over the region for the next seven days, the department said.

Heavy rainfall in northeast India in the past week caused several floods, flash floods, landslides, and rockfalls in the area, which resulted in severe damage to infrastructure and loss of lives, several media reports said. The death toll climbed to 28 on Sunday. The weather department said there is a low-to-moderate risk of flash floods in the northeastern states for the next 24 hours.

Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana on Tuesday and over parts of east Rajasthan till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Dust storms are also expected over parts of west Rajasthan till Thursday, the bureau said.

The weather agency forecast heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala till Wednesday. A wet spell is anticipated over parts of coastal Karnataka in the same period, the agency said.

A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over parts of south peninsular India till Wednesday and over parts of east and central India till Friday, the weather bureau said.

Hot and humid weather is expected to continue over Odisha till Friday, and over Gangetic West Bengal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu till Wednesday, the bureau said.

No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over northwest India in the next three days, and a gradual rise by 3-5 degrees Celsius is seen thereafter, the weather department said. In central India, maximum temperatures are not likely to change in the next three days, after which a gradual rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius is seen, it said.

A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-4 degrees Celsius is likely over east India in the next three days and no change is seen thereafter. No significant changes in maximum temperatures are expected over the rest of the country, the weather bureau said.  End
