Two yrs post withdrawal, INR 62 bln of INR 2,000 notes still in system - RBI

MUMBAI – Two years after the INR 2,000 currency notes were withdrawn from circulation, INR 61.81 billion of these notes remained within the banking system as of the close of business on Saturday, the Reserve Bank of India said Monday, in its periodic status update on the withdrawal.
The central bank said 98.26% of the INR 2,000 banknotes in circulation since withdrawal were returned as of Saturday. At the close of business on May 19, 2023, INR-2,000-notes worth INR 3.56 trillion were in circulation.
On May 19, 2023, the central bank had withdrawn the INR 2,000 denomination notes from circulation, even though these notes remained a legal tender. Currently, the facility to deposit or exchange the withdrawn note is only open at the RBI's 19 issue offices. End
