Exports offset domestic dullness for Bajaj Auto in May, despatches up 8% YoY

NEW DELHI – An encouraging growth in exports offset the lull in domestic sales as Bajaj Auto Ltd. reported an 8% growth in its May despatches, on Monday. Demand for the company's automobile units remained better abroad in two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, according to its exchange filing. Shares of the company sharply underperformed the frontline indices following disclosure of auto sales. At 1007 IST, Bajaj Auto sahres traded at INR 8,439 a piece on the National Stock Exchange, down 2% from the previous close, while the Nifty 50 was down only 0.7%.
Bajaj Auto sold 384,621 units to dealers in May, compared to 355,323 a year ago. In India, the Pune-based company sold 225,733 units, barely higher on year. However, it exported 158,888 units overseas, registering a growth of a staggering 22% on year.
Two-wheeler sales by Bajaj Auto increased 9% on year to 332,370 units. Of this, the company sold 191,412 units in India, up only 2%. It exported 140,958 two-wheelers to dealers in May, up 20% on year.
Bajaj Auto sold 52,251 commercial vehicles in May, up 5% on year. The company despatched 34,321 units of these vehicles in India during the month, down 7% on year. Exports of Bajaj Auto's commercial vehicles grew 37% on year to 17,930 units in May.
This financial year so far, Bajaj Auto has sold 750,431 automobile units in India and abroad, up only 1% on year. While domestic sales have contracted 6% on year in this period, exports are up 13%.
For the March quarter, Bajaj Auto reported a net profit of INR 20.49 billion on revenues of INR 121.48 billion. End
