Ashok Leyland total sales up 5.5% in May, light commercial vehicles lag

HYDERABAD - Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland Ltd reported a rise in its total vehicle dispatches in May. The company saw a 5.46% year-on-year rise in its total sales volumes to 15,484 units during the month, it said in a filing to the stock exchanges Monday.

 

The company's total dispatches had contracted in April. Sequentially, the volumes rose by 15.4%. While heavy and commercial vehicle volumes led the overall volume growth, light commercial vehicle volumes were weak. The company sold a total 10,282 units of medium and heavy commercial vehicles, up 11% on year. Within the medium and heavy commercial vehicles segment, truck sales increased by 12% on year to 7,606 units. Buses sales increased by 9% on year to 2,676 units. In the light commercial vehicles category, the company sold 5,202 units, registering a fall of 4% on year.

 

The company sold 14,534 units in India, up 5% on year. In the medium and heavy commercial vehicles category, sales improved by 10% on year in India to 9,386 units, led by trucks, which rose 12% on year to 7,466 units. Bus sales rose just 1% to 1,920 units, but showed signs of recovery compared to April, when they fell 22% on year. The light commercial vehicle sales in India were also weak in the latest month, reporting a 3% fall in volumes to 5,148 units.

 

On a cumulative basis, the company's total sales volumes for Apr-May were flat year-on-year at 28,905 units, while domestic volumes fell 1% to 27,043 units.

 

At 0955 IST, shares of Ashok Leyland were trading at INR 237.06 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.4% from the previous close.  End
