NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s passenger vehicle despatches in May contracted nearly 6% on year, as sales in all sub-segments fell, barring vans and utility vehicles, according to an exchange filing by the company on Monday. Exports continued their robust growth, as the company sold nearly 80% more cars overseas in May. Including sales in India and abroad, the company sold 180,077 automobile units in May, up 3% on year.

Sales of the Gurugram-based automobile giant's mini cars fell to 6,776 units in May, down almost 32% on year. Mini cars include the Alto and S-Presso. Despatches of compact cars like Baleno, WagonR, Dzire, and Swift fell to 61,502 units in May, down nearly 10% on year. Maruti Suzuki sold 458 Ciaz units, compared to 730 units in the same month a year ago.

In a deviation from recent trends, sales of Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicles reported subdued growth. The company sold 54,899 utility vehicles in May, up a paltry 1.3% on year. Its utility vehicles include models such as Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and the XL6.

Overall domestic sales of Maruti Suzuki fell just over 5% on year to 148,858 units. The company sold 31,219 cars to dealers abroad, up from 17,367 in May last year.

Vans was the only other sub-segment to report growth in May, albeit on a lower base. Maruti Suzuki sold 12,327 Eeco vans to dealerships in May, up nearly 13% on year. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers contracted 3% to 10,168 units. Such sales, in essence, are vehicles later rebadged and sold by Toyota India.
