NEW DELHI – Hero MotoCorp Ltd.'s overall two-wheeler despatches in May rose in low single digits, mainly driven by robust scooter wholesale sales, according to the company's exchange filing late Sunday. Sharply contrasting the recent trend seen in the Indian automobile industry, growth of Hero MotoCorp's exports in May was flat.
Hero MotoCorp sold 507,701 units to dealerships in May, just under 2% higher compared to the same month a year ago. This financial year so far, the company has sold 813,107 two-wheelers to dealerships, around 21% lower than the year-ago period. "The company continued its strong market momentum in the month with 5 lakh VAHAN* registrations, underlining a sustained customer preference and demand," Hero MotoCorp said in a statement. Vahan data refers to registrations for units done by the authorities, which shows the retail market data.
Motorcycles comprise a big chunk of Hero MotoCorp's overall despatches. The company sold 475,164 motorcycles in May to dealers, barely higher than the 471,186 sold in the same month a year ago. Scooter sales, forming a much smaller part of the overall sales pie, fared much better. Hero MotoCorp sold 32,537 scooters in May, up nearly 21% on year.
Hero MotoCorp sold 488,997 two-wheelers in India in May, up nearly 2% on year. Overseas, it sold 18,704 two-wheelers, barely up on year.
"Exports maintained a steady trajectory, with growth anticipated in the near future underscoring increasing demand for the company's offerings in key geographies," Hero MotoCorp said. Without quantifying the sales, the company said its global retail performance showed "robust" momentum, particularly in Bangladesh and Colombia. The company's electric two-wheeler sales under the VIDA brand sold 8,361 units in May. It will launch a new electric two-wheeler on Jul. 1.
For the March quarter, the company reported a net profit of INR 10.81 billion on revenue of INR 99.39 billion. On Friday, shares of the company closed at INR 4,362 on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.2%. End
