MUMBAI – Escorts Kubota Ltd. saw a marginal rise in overall wholesale volumes in May as a slight drop in domestic sales offset the positive impact of sharp rise in exports. Its overall sales in May were up only 1% on year at 10,354 units, according to exchange filing by the company on Sunday. However, this was better than Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers' estimate of only 0.1% growth.
The company sold 9,703 tractors in India, down 2% on year. Its exports increased to 651 tractors as compared with 380 units last year.
The company has started this financial year on a weak note with cumulative sales volumes in April and May seeing a marginal fall. Its cumulative sales in April and May were at 19,083 units as compared with 19,125 units during the same period last year.
Escorts Kubota expects demand for tractors to be better, going forward. "The timely onset of the monsoon season has uplifted spirits on the ground. Agricultural activities for the upcoming karif crops are set to begin as planned," the company said.
Its construction equipment business saw a significant drop in volumes due to new emission norms leading to higher prices. This business reported a sales volume of 321 units in May, down nearly 30% on year.
"The Construction Equipment (CE) market is facing challenges due to price escalation caused by changes in emission norms, an early monsoon, and delay in infrastructure projects deployment," the company said in the filing. It expects demand to increase in the second half of this financial year.
During the March quarter, Escorts Kubota reported a net profit of INR 2.98 billion on a revenue of 24.30 billion. Friday, shares of the company closed at INR 3,321.70 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.6%. End
