Tata Motors India despatches fail to grow YoY for 5th straight month in May

AHMEDABAD - Automobile despatches by Tata Motors Ltd. to Indian dealerships failed to register a year-on-year growth for the fifth consecutive month in May, as both passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle segments contracted, according to the company's exchange filing Sunday. Exports emerged as the silver lining for the company as combined exports of its commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle segments were 2,758 units in May, up 73% on year from 1,593 units.

 

Tata Motors sold 70,187 units to dealers in May, 8.6% lower year-on-year from 76,766 units. The company has not registered a sales growth exceeding 1% since June last year. In India, the company despatched 67,429 units to dealers, registering a fall of 10%. In FY25, the company's domestic despatches in a month exceeded the 3% mark only once, in April, 2024.

 

Passenger vehicles contributed roughly 60% to Tata Motors' overall sales volume in May. The company sold 42,040 passenger vehicles in May, including electric vehicles, 11% lower on year. Sales of this segment in India fell nearly 11% to 41,557 units, while exports grew to 483 units, up 28% on year. The company sold 5,685 electric vehicles in India and abroad in May, up 2% on year.

 

Commercial vehicle despatches contracted 5% on year to 28,147 units. Within this, sales to dealers in India fell 9% on year to 25,872 units while exports grew 87% to 2,275 units. 

 

Sales of small commercial vehicles used for cargo and pickup, which form around 36% of its India commercial vehicle segment, tumbled 20% on year to 9,064 units. Heavy commercial truck despatches declined 10% on year to 7,106 units. Intermediate light commercial vehicles' despatches grew 11% to 4,954 units while despatches of passenger carriers remained flat at 4,748 units.

 

In India, despatches of the company's medium and heavy intermediate commercial vehicles in May fell slightly on year to 12,406 units, from 12,987 units a year ago. Despatches of this segment, including exports, rose to 13,614 units in May, up 0.6% on year. 

 

For the quarter ended March, the company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 84.70 billion on revenue of INR 1.195 trillion. Friday, its shares ended 0.7% down from previous close at INR 719.50 on the National Stock Exchange.
