MUMBAI – Eicher Motors Ltd.'s year-on-year commercial vehicle wholesale volume growth in May was the slowest in five months. Its commerical vehicle sales through the joint venture with Swedish conglomerate Volvo group were 7,402 units in May, a rise of over 7% compared with the same month last year. This was a sharp slowdown from the over 27% rise it saw in April wholesales volumes.

The May numbers were slightly below expectations. Brokerages Nomura and Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers had expected the commercial vehicle sales volume for Eicher to rise 8-9%.

The growth in sales volume in May was largely driven by domestic sales of small commercial vehicles, and light and medium duty trucks, which reported 15% year-on-year growth in the month to 3,236 units. Apart from this, light and medium buses volumes rose 10% to 1,882 units, which also aided growth in the domestic market. Sales volumes of its large vehicles declined in May with those of heavy duty trucks down 8% to 1,502 and heavy duty buses down 3% to 138 units.

Its commercial vehicles exports grew nearly 21% on year in May, but it were still slower than the growth seen in the previous eight months. Its exports in May were 501 units.

In the March quarter, Eicher Motors reported a consolidated net profit of INR 13.62 billion on a consolidated revenue of INR 52.41 billion. Friday, its shares had closed at INR 5,333.50 on the National Stock Exchange, down nearly 1%.  End
