MUMBAI – The government has reduced the sugar sales quota for June for Maharashtra and raised it for Uttar Pradesh, according to a notification from the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The all-India quota for June has been set at 2.30 million tonnes, down 2.1% from 2.35 million tonnes in May, and nearly 10% lower than the 2.55 million tonnes allocated a year ago.

Maharashtra's sales quota has been cut by 7% on month to 681,878 tonnes in June. Meanwhile, the quota for Uttar Pradesh has been raised 2% to 947,509 tonnes and that for Karnataka has been reduced by 4% to 269,473 tonnes.

The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. Mills across the country had 13.43 million tonnes of sugar stock as of May end. The 2023-24 sugar season ended on Sept. 30 with a stock of 7.8 million tonnes.

The department has issued stringent guidelines to ensure compliance with monthly stockholding limits for sugar mills following repeated violations by certain groups and individual mills. The new measures, effective from Apr. 1, aim to enforce stricter penalties for non-compliance. If any group or individual sugar mill violates the stockholding limit orders and dispatches more than the prescribed release quota for a particular month, the excess quantity of sugar sold shall be deducted from the release quota for the subsequent month.

The sugar-mill-wise maximum quantity of white or refined sugar for domestic sale and dispatch during the month of June has been worked out on the basis of notional stock as on Saturday, according to the notification.

Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has pegged the net sugar output for the current season at 26.1 million tonnes-26.2 million tonnes, after the diversion of 3.5 million tonnes for making ethanol. Last year, the country's sugar output was 31.90 million tonnes.

The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for June, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
