NEW DELHI – The central government's tax collections in April grew 6.5% on year to INR 2.715 trillion, driven by robust income tax collections, data released by the Controller General of Accounts on Friday showed. In April 2024, tax collections had risen 16.9% on year to INR 2.550 trillion.
Income tax collections of INR 1.096 trillion in April were 10.8% higher on year. Corporate tax collections, on the other hand, fell sharply by 40.7% on year to INR 214.61 billion. The Union Budget for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) has projected India's direct tax collection to total INR 25.20 trillion, up 12.7% on year.
Tax collections in April were also modest as the government's devolution to states during the month was 17% higher on year. In April, the Centre transferred INR 817.35 billion to states, translating to 5.7% of the full year's aim of INR 14.22 trillion. Net tax collections in April was INR 1.897 trillion, up 2.5%. The Budget has projected India's net tax collections at INR 28.375 trillion.
On a month-on-month basis, collections fell 54% as the government's March collection was high due to advanced tax mop-up. Advance tax is filed by individuals and corporates in four instalments, in the middle of June, September, December and March.
On the indirect tax front, collection from central goods and services tax fell 14.2% on year to INR 782.4 billion. Customs and excise duty collections also fell in April, data showed.
The Budget has projected total tax collections for FY26 to be INR 42.702 trillion, up 10.8% from the revised estimate of last year. Data released for FY25 earlier on Friday showed that the government has missed the revised aim by INR 582 billion. This means, for the government to meet the target this year, collections will have to grow at a higher-than-budgeted pace of 12.5%.
