India FY25 fiscal deficit 4.8% of GDP, in line with Budget aim

NEW DELHI – India's fiscal deficit fell to 4.8% of GDP in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) from 5.6% the previous year, data released Friday by the Controller General of Accounts showed. The fiscal deficit was in line with the revised target of 4.8% of GDP in the Budget for FY26.
In absolute terms, the government's fiscal deficit in FY25 was INR 15.773 trillion, accounting for 100.5% of the revised target of INR 15.695 trillion, data showed.
Total receipts jumped 10.4% on year to INR 30.782 trillion in FY25 but were lower than the revised estimate of INR 31.470 trillion. The total expenditure of INR 46.555 trillion in FY25 was lower than the revised estimate of INR 47.165 trillion.
The government's capital expenditure during the year was INR 10.520 trillion, 3.3% higher than the revised target of INR 10.184 trillion.
The government's gross tax mop-up rose 9.5% on year to INR 37.952 trillion in FY25, but fell short of the revised target of INR 38.535 trillion for the year.
For March, the government's fiscal deficit was INR 2.304 trillion, up 51.3% from a year ago. Capital expenditure during the month was at a record high of INR 2.401 trillion. Total receipts fell 2.0% on year to INR 5.319 trillion in March.
