IMD issues red alert for extremely heavy rains over northeast India for Fri

MUMBAI – The depression over Bangladesh is likely to weaken into a well-marked low pressure area in the next 12 hours, due to which very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is seen continuing over northeastern states till Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said.
As such, the department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall for Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for Friday, and for exceptionally heavy rainfall over Meghalaya for the same day. The department has issued an orange alert for the same regions for Saturday. A red alert indicates more than 204.4 millimetres of rain in 24 hours and an orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres.
The department has also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala for Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka on Friday, it said. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over various parts of south India till Monday, it said. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Konkan and Goa till Monday, the weather bureau said.
A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over parts of northwest India till Tuesday, and over parts of east and central India till Monday, the weather agency said. The agency also sees dust storms over parts of west Rajasthan from Monday to Friday.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has covered some parts of Chattisgarh and Odisha as of Friday. The northern limit of monsoon continues to pass through Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, and Balurghat, the department said. End
