PM Modi lays foundation stone for INR 10.10 bln city gas project in Bengal

NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for city gas distribution project worth INR 10.10 billion in Alipurduar, West Bengal. The prime minister announced that the project will provide clean and affordable piped gas to over 250,000 households.
"City Gas Distribution Project is not merely a pipeline initiative but a testament to the government's commitment to doorstep delivery of essential services", Modi said while addressing a rally in Alipurduar. He also hailed the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana highlighting that the scheme, launched in 2016, had significantly improved the lives of millions of poor women by providing them relief from smoke-filled kitchens.
"As India moves towards becoming a developed nation, Bengal's participation is both expected and essential", emphasised Modi, highlighting the Centre's continuous efforts to accelerate infrastructure, innovation, and investment in the region.
Referring to Urja Ganga project, Modi said gas pipelines have been extended to connect the eastern states of the country under the initiative, which significantly enhanced gas accessibility in West Bengal and other regions. He noted that from pipeline construction to gas supply, job generation had increased at multiple levels.
"India is now progressing towards a future where energy is affordable, clean, and universally accessible", Modi said.
The prime minister also asserted that the vision of a developed India cannot be realised without Bengal's growth. Keeping this in mind, Modi said, the Centre has initiated developmental projects worth billions of rupees over the past decade. "The newly launched project is not merely a pipeline, but a lifeline of progress", said Modi, reiterating the government's commitment to making life easier for citizens and ensuring a bright future for Bengal.
Earlier in the day, Modi laid foundation stone and inaugurated multiple development projects in Sikkim through video conferencing. He addressed the 'Sikkim@50' programme in Gangtok via a video conference and greeted the people on the 50th anniversary of the statehood of Sikkim. "50 years ago, Sikkim charted a democratic future for itself. The people of Sikkim not only connected with India's geography but also with its soul", Modi said. He also stated that the government is working with a vision to make Sikkim a global tourism destination. End
