Total counterfeit bank notes declined 2.4% on year in FY25

NEW DELHI – The total number of fake Indian currency bank notes detected in the banking sector declined 2.4% on year to 217,396 in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the Reserve Bank of India said Thursday in its annual report for FY25.
Of the total counterfeit currency detected in the banking system, the number of fake INR-2,000 bank notes declined the most at 86.5% on year to 3,508. The number of INR 100, INR 200, INR 50, INR 20 and INR 10 counterfeit bank notes also fell year-on-year. However, the number of fake INR-500 bank notes in the system jumped 37.3% on year to 117,722 in FY25, the RBI said.
During FY25, out of the total fake Indian currency notes detected in the banking sector, 4.7% were detected at the central bank, while the rest were found at the banks.
Under its agenda for FY26, the RBI will focus on carrying forward the project on modernisation of the currency management infrastructure and strengthening the integrity of Indian bank notes through the introduction of new and upgraded security features.
Further, the central bank will also focus on the installation and commencement of operation of new shredding and briquetting systems machines, capacity augmentation for processing of banknotes and understanding the payment behaviour of the public through a survey. End
