--Minister Vaishnaw: First made-in-India chip to roll out this year
--CONTEXT: Minister Vaishnaw speaking at CII's Annual Business Summit
NEW DELHI – Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Thursday said that the first 'Made in India' semiconductor chip would be rolled out this year. Addressing the CII Annual Business Summit 2025, Vaishnaw said there were many people who had criticised the government when it decided to go for semiconductor manufacturing, but the government had adopted a pragmatic approach.
"We decided to target a particular segment, which has a close to 60% of the market volume, and which directly feeds into our automobile industry, our telecom industry, our power industry. We have today about six units, which are under construction, and our first made in India chip will roll out this year," Vaishnaw said. He added that earlier, people would say that one should focus on services alone. "Manufacturing and services, are...important for the next level of growth," he said.
Vaishnaw also said artificial intelligence had brought a humongous change in the society. "We need to have AI models that are trained on Indian culture, nuances, languages, social norms. One of the first such models is being developed by Sarvam. There are three or four applications, which are in an advanced stage of approvals," the minister said.
The government, he said, was working with an approach to ensure that technology was not concentrated at the hands of a few. The government would get 14,000 graphics processing units (GPU), he said. "...That's the approach we are following in AI mission. So in the first round, our target was to have 10,000 GPUs, made available to everybody to create a data centre and open it all possible people who would like to use it for free. That was the model. So against a target of 10,000, in the first round itself, we got 18,000 GPUs. Now we are about to get another 14,000 GPUs," Vaishnaw said.
He said that the government has roped in premier institutes such as the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur for developing solutions to authentically detect deepfake videos. "We have enrolled the institutes, including IITs and NITs, who are developing solutions...For example, IIT Jodpur is developing a solution to authentically detect data. And the results are very good so far. And our approach will be once these technologies are developed, we make it open source for all of you, so that you can use those technologies," he said.
Vaishnaw, also the railway minister, said the Indian Railways had achieved a major milestone, becoming the second-largest cargo carrying railway in the world. End
