Gold holdings rise by 57.48 tonnes in FY25 to 879.58 tonnes

MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India's gold holdings rose by 57.48 tonnes in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) to 879.58 tonnes. Of the holdings, 311.38 tonnes or over 35% was held as backing for notes, while the remaining 568.20 tonnes was treated as assets, the RBI said in its annual report for FY25 Thursday.
In terms of value, gold held as assets rose over 57% on year to INR 4.32 trillion as of Mar. 31. The increase was on account of the addition of physical gold, a rise in gold prices, and depreciation of the rupee against the dollar, the RBI said.
As of May 16, the RBI held $81.22 billion worth of gold in its foreign exchange reserves. End
